Hanami flower viewing all over Tokyo.

Some of the most beautiful flowers you will ever find anywhere.

White sakura in the sun.

Each sakura tree seems to have a slightly different look to the flowers and shade from the purest white to deepest pinks.

The practice of hanami is many centuries old and I understand why, starting around the Nara Period (710) in Japan.

Sakura blooming was used to know when to start rice-planting.  The people made offerings with sake to the kami “god” inside the trees.

At first only the elite of the Imperial Court were allowed to enjoy hanami, but soon spread to samurai society, then to the common people as well.
