In Japan, the swastika is called manji. The manji doesn't
have the kind of stigma in Japan as it does in the West, and is used pretty
frequently in Buddhist tradition. It is considered to be a sacred and
auspicious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and dates back to before
2nd century B.C.
The swastika has been highly stigmatized because of its use
in and association with Nazism.
